UL Electronically Protected Motors

We have been requested to look into implementing electronics to thermally protect a motor i.e. not have a separate conventional fuse / thermostat etc type approach. UL 1004-7 seems to be the correct standard for Electronically Protected Motors and it looks like anything implemented will have to meet the requirements of UL 60730-1. I am assuming that if software is involved certification becomes much more difficult, correct? Has anybody got any useful advice?

Hi I suggest to use software implementation using the MISRA C Rules
Motor Industry Software Reliability Association
Kindly See this link
http://www.misra.org.uk/MISRAHome/WhatisMISRA/tabid/66/Default.aspx

The world is getting more and more into software ,Unless UL people has a major objection against it , it is possible

HI Ilan, thanks for your comment. We already use MISRA Cdue to all of our automotive work but I suspect good old conervative UL will ask us to jump through more hoops than that! It is safety critical after all.

You might be surprised , people are changing , even good old UL is changing , if it worth doing the effort then do it , after all to say NO is the easiest way isn't it?

Michel - you missed the point of my posting. We are looking to design the electronics to provide a UL approved Electronically Protected Motor!!
