UL Electronically Protected Motors

We have been requested to look into implementing electronics to thermally protect a motor i.e. not have a separate conventional fuse / thermostat etc type approach. UL 1004-7 seems to be the correct standard for Electronically Protected Motors and it looks like anything implemented will have to meet the requirements of UL 60730-1. I am assuming that if software is involved certification becomes much more difficult, correct? Has anybody got any useful advice?
