What is the Working Principle of an Frequency Meter? e.g. the Freq meter in a power plant used to display the freq of the power being generated. How does it measure the freq?

It is fed from a voltage transformer where voltage is already at sinusoidal wave frequency of 50Hz, so freq meter sees both +ve & -ve of a cycle and counts 50 cycles (or 60 as the case may be)
